Secret Life of a Rambler

When my husband and I first joined the Ramblers in June 2005 we were assigned to Chesterfield Ramblers because we live just over the border in Derbyshire and we thoroughly enjoyed about 5 years of walking with them. Then my husband became more and more involved in cricket umpiring so I thought it was about time I transferred to Worksop Ramblers being much closer to home. It soon became apparent that they were desperate for a treasurer and as my professional life was in school admin. I was snapped up and found myself very much on the committee. After a few years as treasurer, I then became the Group Secretary. It’s not too onerous a job – the biggest challenge is coordinating, typing and distributing the walk programme. I’ll hopefully be able to continue walking for a few more years, but it doesn’t get any easier or is it that the hills are getting steeper?
Why did you join Ramblers? To get out and enjoy the countryside with like-minded people. I enjoy talking to people as much as I enjoy walking – walking and talking – the perfect combination!
How long have you been a member? 12½ years
Where is your favourite walking destination? Peak District
If you could walk anywhere in the world, where would you choose? Anywhere in Great Britain – can’t choose!
What is your most memorable walk? Kinder Scout on a summer’s day when the weather turned to rain and sleet – was not adequately dressed for the conditions!
What is your most treasured piece of walking kit? Walking pole – it gives me the confidence to tackle hard ascents and descents. Also useful for poking things.
Have you ever got lost on a walk? No. I never lead – they don’t let me!
Who would be your ideal walking companion(s)? Fellow members of Worksop Ramblers
How do you relax? Knitting, watching TV
What is your favourite meal? Roast lamb with mint sauce
What is your guiltiest pleasure? Wenslydale cheese
What music would you like played at your funeral? ‘Tell me it’s not true’ from Blood Brothers and ‘Ramblin’ Boy’ sung by Pete Seeger.
